Fulfilling My Students’ Wishes

After I listened to my students concerns about getting more books for them to read, I started thinking of ways of getting the books. I knew that I couldn’t go to my principal to ask for books because even if he wanted to help us; he couldn’t due to the school’s budget constrains.

I learned about this wonderful organization named DonorsChoose.org., which post educational proposals. I did a proposal, which I named “Reading Dreams.” I asked for 42 fiction and non-fiction books to fill our classroom library. I posted my proposal on November 12, 2009, and before I knew it was fully funded. It took less than one month. On December 3, 2009, I got the exciting news that my project was fully funded. I shared the news with my students, and they were thrilled. They were jumping up and down, and I joined them in the celebration.

This is what this job is all about showing my students that I care enough about them, that they matter to me and that I am there not just to teach them Science, Math, and Language Arts but to support them and make there dreams come true.

Helping My Students

This New Year has giving me new insights into ways of helping my students learn all they can about this crazy world that we live in. From this insight grew the thought and idea of creating this blog, which will give me an opportunity to share what I’m doing to help my students develop their learning skills, and at the same time perhaps my experiences will help others in some small way. I wish to instill upon my readers to post comments and suggestions and ideas because it is my believe that this blog can give me new ideas as well as other readers’ ideas that help each and all of us to help others.

Reading Dreams

I have spent my days working at this school for the pass six years. One thing that keeps me coming back every year is the commitment of the school to make a difference in the life of my students. This school is a small charter school with a limited amount of resources yet the school makes every effort to do the best it can to offer the best education possible to each and every one of its students. I live in another city 45 miles away from my school, it is for this reason that I am willing to fight the distance and hardship that it places on my family to help make this school the best it can be.

My students love reading books. They are very excited about reading because it is like doors have been open for them and now they are discovering the treasure of life. We only have 30 books and all of them are in poor condition due primarily to the number of times the students are forced to use them. My students asked me if I could get new books for them because the ones we have are not fun anymore. Listening to my students’ concerns, I decided to take matter in my hands.

I invite you to come back and visit my blog, and I will share with you what I am doing to fulfill my students’ wishes.
